A Small Peek into the World of Shorashim by Morah Sara Bienstock

After the February break the children of Shorashim are back in their new home in Hollis Hills Jewish Center.  Although we are one of the largest classes in Ohr Chadash, we are quite comfortable in our new home.

March is a busy month for us. We have two very important and fun Jewish Holidays to study; Purim and Passover.  We started the month learning about the Jewish people being saved from the evil Haman and the joyous holiday of Purim.  We made projects and studied various ways we celebrate from dressing up, reading the Megillah (the book of Esther) and eating and giving out delicious hamentashen.  We are continuing the month studying about cleaning our houses and looking for bread and cookie products (like hamentashen).   You should hear the songs coming from the classroom and the music room.  We have learned songs for both holidays like Chag Purim and Mah Nistanah.  If you are lucky enough to have a Shorashim child in your house you are aware of their enthusiasm for singing.

In addition to studying the holidays, which we are focusing on most of our day, we are continuing to learn to identify the name and print the letters of the Aleph-Bet.  We are almost done the 22 primary letters and are starting to realize that these letters can make up words that we all know and recognize, like Abba and Ima (father and mother) and prayers in our Siddur.
